What exactly am I downloading, and why is it called the DyKnow "client?”
"Client" refers to an application running on a personal computer that can connect to corresponding server software. Since the free download contains only the client half of the DyKnow client-server solution, it has limited functionality.
With the DyKnow client software, authoring tools like pen and text box are available to prepare, present, and save a lesson. However, the DyKnow client software by itself cannot provide the features of DyKnow Vision (such as note delivery, panel submission, and participant control) and DyKnow Monitor (such as thumbnail view and keyboard control) that are only available when connecting to a DyKnow server with a valid UserID and Password.
What are the minimum requirements to download the DyKnow client?
To use DyKnow applications on a personal computer, you must be running Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Vista. Your computer must have a minimum of 512 MB RAM and the free Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.
Will the DyKnow client run on non-PC platforms?
Yes, with an emulator. DyKnow applications are designed to run in a Windows environment. However, some users run the DyKnow client software on Macintosh and Linux systems by using Windows emulators such as Virtual PC and VMware Workstation, respectively. We neither support nor endorse these products, and we acknowledge that these emulators may not necessarily provide optimal performance. Contact support@dyknow.com if you have questions about alternative platforms.
Why do I have to fill out the form on the download page?
Your DyKnow client software download is completely free. Completing the form allows DyKnow representatives to track who is downloading, creating a direct line to offer assistance to new users. DyKnow never sells the personal information you provide.
Do I have to fill out the online form each time I download the client on my machine?
No. If you have “cookies” enabled in your Internet browser, the download page will recognize you upon return and you will not have to enter your information again. For example, in Internet Explorer 6, select Tools > Internet Options and then click on the Privacy tab. This setting must be at high or lower in order for the DyKnow Web site to remember your visit and not prompt you for your information again. If you are evaluating DyKnow applications on a widespread basis, it is permissible to copy the client installer and the .NET Framework 2.0 to a shared network drive at your institution.
What is the difference between the regular client download and the beta?
We have one major release per year. During the development process, DyKnow may release beta versions of an upcoming release. You may choose to download the currently supported release version of the DyKnow client software or the DyKnow client software in beta version. The beta version is developmental and may be unstable or contain unresolved issues. It is not intended to be used in a production environment. The beta version is made available strictly for testing and evaluation of features being developed for the next version for release.
What is the .NET Framework, and why do I need it to run the DyKnow client?
NET (“dot net”) is a Microsoft development platform. It is necessary to have the .NET Framework installed on machines that will be running DyKnow applications. Most new PCs come with the Framework, but if you are not sure that you have the .NET Framework installed, download the DyKnow client first. The installer will prompt you to download the Framework if it is not already installed. The .NET Framework is a free download, and it is only necessary to download and install it on your machine once.
What should I do when the DyKnow installer prompts me to enter “Server Name?”
This only applies to current customers or pre-arranged demonstrations. If you have been given a server name and identifier, type them in the boxes during the install.
If you are a first-time user and are only interested in exploring the client software, simply leave the default setting of "Use DyKnow offline or enter my communication settings later" when prompted.
I have been given a server to connect to. Where do I enter this information?
Once you have launched the DyKnow client software, select Communications Settings at the Sign On screen. Fill out Server Name. Click Advanced Settings, and fill out Server Identifier (if applicable). Make sure that Port is listed as 80 unless otherwise specified.
I am a customer and/or I am scheduled for a demo. Should I sign on?
Yes. Double-click the DyKnow icon on your desktop. You will see a sign on dialog. If you are a DyKnow customer or have arranged for a demonstration, enter the UserID and Password you have been given. Otherwise, click Cancel and then File > New to begin exploring menus and authoring tools.
At the sign on screen, I completed the New User Sign Up. Should I have done this?
If you have not been given a server name, you will not be able to sign up or sign on. If you are a DyKnow customer and/or if you have spoken with a DyKnow representative and you have a valid server name, you may be instructed to complete the New User Sign Up. If you have been given server information, you can sign on as a new user, and you will be classified by default as a “participant” in DyKnow Vision. Typically, participants are students without access to the moderator features designed to help teachers lead classes.
This is an internal error code that may appear during the sign on process. This error usually indicates that the Internet is unavailable. To resolve it, first check to see if you have Internet access on your machine. If you do not, contact your network administrator. If you do have Internet access, launch your DyKnow client software and click Communication Settings at the Sign On screen. Make sure the Server Name matches the name supplied to you by your DyKnow representative. Also, click the Advanced Settings checkbox and make sure the Server Identifier is correct. Press OK and attempt to sign on again. If you are still unable to sign on, email support@dyknow.com for further assistance.
