Flipped Classroom: A Blended Learning Model that Works

Blended learning has taken the educational world by storm over the past six months due to the onset of distance learning. This emerging style of learning incorporates the use of technology in the classroom to enhance the learning experience for the student. A flipped classroom is a blended learning model that provides a structure for learning in the classroom and outside of the classroom with technology. We recently spoke with Miguel Guhlin, Director of Professional Development for TCEA, about how the flipped classroom model works and why it’s so effective.

What is a Flipped Classroom Model?

The flipped classroom model is exactly what it sounds like; learning flipped upside down. Instead of traditionally learning from a textbook and lecture, a flipped classroom approaches learning from an application approach. The main purpose of a flipped classroom is to personalize a lesson for the student and to give students a sense of purpose on why the topic is important and how it can be applied to the real world. 

Kyle Niemis describes flipped learning, a learning style commonly used in conjunction with a flipped classroom, as the transition from the “sage on the stage” style to the “guide on the side.” Essentially, students are given an outline of what the material for the day will look like and then given their own time to learn the material from instructional videos. A teacher’s role in this model is to provide support to students when needed and make sure students are staying on the right track. Students take class time to improve their critical thinking and problem-solving skills by having the freedom to learn on their own.

Does the Flipped Classroom Model Work?

The short answer: Yes. Miguel explained that in the past, there has been a lot of research done to support blended learning and why it works. As blended learning makes its way into classrooms everywhere, many different styles of blended learning have been created to give a variety of options for teachers to personalize learning a bit more. With these models, there are many ways to structure learning opportunities for students. 

For a while, LMS’s were not thought of as productive, but now K-12 is being rushed back into using an LMS due to distance learning and the need for better management of attendance, content, and classes. During this time, many teachers have seized the opportunity to learn from this experience and improve their technological knowledge. Teachers who are going the extra mile to incorporate and learn about technology will have an easier time adjusting to the Fall 2020 semester and all the new changes ahead. 

The flipped classroom is one of the fastest-growing instructional strategies for the upcoming semester and much research has been conducted since it’s the rise in its popularity. Miguel believes a flipped classroom will accelerate student learning significantly in the next year if used effectively. He states, “The masses are falling forward and moving forward together – you don’t want to be stuck alone.”

Blended learning is the future of education. Miguel emphasizes the need to make sure educators adopt digital tools and instructional tools into their curriculum that enhances overall learning. There are no boundaries when it comes to technology and learning. Make sure that the tools you use are effective and impactful. Improve your lessons by using instructional strategies that are proven to work, like a flipped classroom, paired with technology that enhances these strategies.
